Ponies have been treasured in my family for generations; Bessie, Daisy, Goldie, Rusty, Candy, Sheik, Diablo, just to name a few. Grandpa, Daddy, my sons, my grandson, and I have all had special ponies to play with and love. So when I heard about the Farmer’s Wife Pony Club book that Laurie Aaron Hird was working on last year, I told Annie that we just had to get it.

The letters from the pony club winners are delightful glimpses of childhood and family life in the early 1900s. If you had a pony as a child or always wanted one, this book is a “must have”.

Calico Annie’s Pony Club BOM (skill level required—advanced beginner)
Join us in sharing your pony stories and make your own version of this scrappy sampler quilt from traditional block patterns inspired by the letters from the pony winners! We have several options available and encourage you to make this quilt as you please—you can make any size you want, use the fabrics you choose, or let us choose them for you.
No two quilts will be alike!

· We will meet once a month on the 1^st Tuesday of each month beginning on November 1^st, December 6^th
· We will make 4 blocks each month for a total of 48—you may make more, the book has 90 block patterns.
· Piece your blocks with us when Pony Club meets or participate by mail.

Novelty fabrics include horses, western, cowboy/cowgirl, trains, train signs, chickens, cake, clover, patriotic, etc. Each bundle has different fabrics that include many of the focal fabrics in the blocks that Rhonda has made for our pony club. The Book

In 1907 the Webb Publishing Company of St. Paul, Minnesota, created The Farmer's Wife Pony Club. They invited children to join and compete for prizes by selling subscriptions to The Farmer's Wife magazine. The prizes ranged from cameras to rifles, but the grand prize was a Shetland pony with saddle, bridle and often a carriage. To satisfy skeptics who doubted a child would, indeed receive a pony, the editors asked the winners to send photographs of themselves and their ponies. Thankfully, many of the children also sent thank you letters along with their photographs. These endearing, poignant, and sometimes hilarious, letters provide a unique window into the lives of children in the early years of the 20th century.
The Farmer's Wife Pony Club Sampler Quilt book has 320 beautiful pages in an 8" x 8" format. The first two-thirds of the book has letters from the children, one or two photographs of each child with their pony, and a picture of the child's quilt block. The Quilt

The Farmer's Wife Pony Club Quilt is a large queen measuring 96" x 105".
There are ninety traditional 8" blocks, many rarely seen in modern quilt books.
